Badminton Elo Rating: How It Works
If you play badminton regularly, you've probably wondered how good you actually are โ and how you really compare to the people you play with. A badminton Elo rating answers that with a single, honest number that's earned on court, not self-declared. Here's how the Elo system works, how Find Birdie uses it for badminton in Singapore and beyond, and how to push your rating up.
What is an Elo rating?
Elo is a rating system first created for chess and now used across competitive games and sports. Every player has a number. When two players meet, the winner takes points from the loser โ but how many points move depends on the gap between their ratings. Beat someone much stronger and you gain a lot; lose to someone much weaker and you drop a lot. Over enough games, your Elo settles at a number that reflects your true level.
How badminton Elo works on Find Birdie
On Find Birdie, every player starts at 1,000 points. You log the result of each singles or doubles match โ a quick scan of your opponents' Birdie QR codes โ and everyone's rating updates immediately. There's no committee, no self-grading and no seniority: your rating moves only when you actually play. The size of each change follows three simple rules:
- Beat a higher-rated player โ a bigger gain.
- Lose to a lower-rated player โ a bigger drop.
- An expected result (the favourite wins) โ only a small change.
A worked example (singles)
Alex is rated 1,200. Marcus is rated 1,100. Alex is the favourite:
Same match, very different stakes. The unexpected result swings twice as many points โ which is exactly why beating stronger players is the fastest way up.
How doubles ratings work
In doubles, each player keeps their own individual rating. Find Birdie averages each team, compares the two team averages to work out the expected result, then distributes points to each player based on their rating versus the opposing team. So a weaker player on the winning team earns more than their stronger partner โ which keeps mixed-ability games fair and gives everyone a reason to play seriously.
The Find Birdie tiers
Your rating maps to a tier so you can read your level at a glance. Tiers update automatically after every confirmed match โ no manual grading.
| Tier | Rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ Peregrine | 1500+ | The top of the community โ consistent winners against strong opposition. |
| ๐ฆ Osprey | 1400โ1499 | Competitive players with solid technique who challenge advanced opponents. |
| ๐ฆ Eagle | 1300โ1399 | Above-average players who win more than they lose at intermediate level. |
| ๐ฆ Falcon | 1200โ1299 | Developing players with growing consistency and tactical awareness. |
| ๐ฆ Robin | 1100โ1199 | Newer or intermediate players still building consistency. |
| ๐ฃ Fledgling | Below 1100 | Just starting out โ every rally counts. Everyone begins here at 1,000. |
New players show as Calibrating until there's enough data to assign a reliable tier โ usually around 5 matches.
How to improve your badminton Elo rating
- Play often. Your rating only moves when you play โ the more real games you log, the more accurate and current it stays.
- Challenge players slightly above you. Wins against stronger opponents are worth the most points.
- Log every game honestly. Consistent, complete data is what makes the number trustworthy.
- Focus on the result, not the scoreline. Margins don't change your Elo โ only who wins does. A 21โ19 win counts the same as 21โ5.
- In doubles, play seriously even with a weaker partner. You still gain or lose based on the outcome, so every game matters.
Why Elo is fairer than self-rating
Self-declared levels like "intermediate" or "advanced" mean different things to different people and almost never get updated. An Elo rating is objective and live: it reflects your recent results against real opponents, and it's the same number wherever and whoever you play. That makes it easy to find balanced games, seed friendly tournaments, and settle the age-old "who's actually better?" question โ on court, where it belongs.
